Lauren Evans
Having taught art history for the past 9 years the topic has certainly infiltrated my studio practice more than I imaged. My equation for 20th century western art is Goya…Duchamp… You can fill in the blanks.
The bird taken from Goya’s Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuniga inspired my piece, “Perch”, from my current series Side Stepping. Side Stepping is made up of archetypal figures with mousetraps for bodies balancing precariously within and around steel structures creating a tension that plays with our collective unconscious actions. I place this sculpture proudly next to Goya’s painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Personally I think Duchamp would completely approve of the placement of my work taking control of where and when I want it to end up.
Thank you gentlemen for your forward thinking.

Lauren Evans is a visual artist who works in a variety of techniques including sculpture and digital media. Reoccurring themes include metaphors that depict childhood labeling, and our human struggles with control. Her work frequently deals with the formation of childhood and the incredible difficulties that can be encountered in that process of growth. Her work combines the apparent innocent objects of youth with items of the everyday world and with text in ways that are evocative of that particularly vulnerable time.
Evans lives in Los Angeles and received her BFA and MFA, with an emphasis in sculpture, at the University of Southern California. She has exhibited nationally and has been included in several public art projects in Los Angeles and San Diego Counties. Evans teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at Azusa Pacific University as well as design and art history at Los Angeles Southwest College.
